How does this dust collect in protoplanetary discs to form planets like the Earth and people like us?
How do stars feed black holes in tidal disruption events?
How does the common envelope get ejected?
All of these questions can be answered using Phantom, a smoothed particle hydrodynamics code developed to explore astrophysical phenonema, and MCFOST, a class-leading radiative transfer code.
We are excited to host the 1st North American Phantom Users Workshop in Canada at the Memorial University of Newfoundland between 8-12 July, 2024, which is the sixth workshop in our series of Phantom Users Workshops.
AIMS
1. To share results obtained using Phantom and MCFOST.
2. To consolidate development efforts.
3. To set a roadmap for development priorities.
4. To grow the user community, and especially to encourage sideways interaction between users
Each afternoon of the workshop will be set aside for collaborative hack sessions to foster interaction and implement new features and tests.
Dates: 8th-12th July 2024
Venue: Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Canada
Abstract submission is now closed.
Registration is closed.
The in-person registration fee will be $225 CAD for students and $325 CAD for non-students. The registration fee includes lunch + morning and afternoon coffee breaks for all 5 days, the welcome event, the conference dinner and the conference excursion.
While in-person attendance is encouraged, remote attendance and/or remote presentation will be supported for those that are unable to attend in person. Please indicate if you will be attending in-person or remotely on the abstract submission form.
April 4, 2024: Registration and abstract submission opens.
June 10, 2024: Abstract submission deadline.
June 24, 2024: Registration deadline.
July 8, 2024: Workshop begins.
The Conference schedule is available below.
Talk abstracts are available here.
Each day will feature a series of science talks in the morning, with afternoons focused around collaborative hack sessions.
Talk slides will be posted here after the workshop.

The conference will be held in:
Emera Innovation Exchange Conference Centre
Signal Hill Campus
Memorial University of Newfoundland
St. John's, NL, Canada
Please note that the Signal Hill Campus is a satellite campus of Memorial University (not the main campus). It is a newly renovated space for conference hosting that is nestled between the downtown core of St. John's and the Signal Hill National Historic Site.
FLIGHTS
The airport code for the St. John's International Airport is YYT.
International visitors will most likely enter Canada through Toronto (YYZ) or Montreal (YUL). Halifax (YHZ) is the closest airport to St. John's, which connects to several USA airports and to London Heathrow.
There are multiple domestic flights each day to St. John's from Toronto (~3 hrs) and Montreal (~2.5 hrs), as well as from Halifax (~2 hrs).Air Canada is the largest carrier that will service the highest number of international locations and offer the largest number of connecting flights into St. John's. This year, after a Covid hiatus, WestJet will begin offering direct flights three times per week between St. John's and London Gatwick (~6 hrs).
Newfoundland is a beautiful island, but traveling to St. John's over land (and water) from Halifax would entail either 16 hours driving plus a 7 hour ferry ride (via Port aux Basques) or 5 hours driving plus a 16 hour ferry (via Argentia).
ACCOMMODATIONS
Memorial University's Signal Hill Campus is adjacent to the downtown core. There are a variety of accommodation options (hotels, airbnbs, traditional b&bs) within walking distance of campus (~20 min).
There are many quality restaurants and cafes in downtown St. John's. Many expand to provide outdoor sidewalk seating during Summer months (though weather dependent).
WEATHER
Weather can be highly variable in St. John's. A typical day in July would be sunny and a cool 20 degrees Celsius, though weather during this time of year can range from 30 degrees with high humidity to 15 degrees and dense fog (we are known for our fog!). St. John's is situated in a temperature bath of the cold North Atlantic Ocean, so cool ocean air can often come ashore and change weather rapidly. We hope for warm, sunny days, but it is advisable to be prepared for cool, wet weather.
TOURISM
St. John's is the oldest city in North America and there are many attractions, such as
the Signal Hill National Historic Site (wonderful views of the city), The Rooms (provincial museum),
Quidi Vidi (quaint fishing village), and Cape Spear Lighthouse (most Easterly point in North America).
George Street is the lively entertainment centre of St. John's.
And the East Coast Trail offers several hundred km's of coastal hiking north/south of St. John's.
The Hop On Hop Off Bus is a convenient way to reach multiple sites within a day.
Travel outside of St. John's typically requires a car. Newfoundland is a big place. Some key highlights to mention:
- Saint Pierre et Miquelon are two French colonies off the South coast of Newfoundland (~4 hour drive outside of St. John's).
Wonderful European atmosphere, French cuisine and bakeries. This is international travel. You will need your passport and Euros (not CAD).
- The Bonavista peninsula (~4 hours) is beautiful rural Newfoundland. Great dining and attractions. Walk to the cliff's edge to view the puffins in Elliston.
- Gros Morne National Park (West coast, ~8 hours) showcases Canadian nature. Go sea kayaking in the fjords, or do any number of short, day-long or multi-day hikes.
The Tablelands region is a spectacular display of rocks from the Earth's mantle, creating a Mars-like environment surrounded by lush green forest.
- L'Anse aux Meadows is the site where the Vikings landed in North America in the 11th century (UNESCO World Heritage Site;
aprrox 1000 km and 12 hours from St. John's).
- Gander (~4 hours) is well-known for housing nearly 7,000 airline passengers during the 9/11 attacks
(watch the Come From Away broadway musical, which is performing this Summer).
- Fogo Island (~6 hours) is home to one of the four corners of the Earth.
Participation in the workshop is subject to the Astronomical Society of Australia code of conduct for scientific meetings
